Congratulations! You have a new puppy!

This is a very exciting time and at the moment I bet your pup is the  centre of attention and can do little wrong. However, puppies grow up all too quickly. Suddenly those cute mannerisms that made you laugh in  your small puppy can develop into intolerable activities a growing pup or an adolescent dog. This is the  time when most dog owners need to seek professional advice about  behaviour problems.

By adolescence the work needed to re-train your dog is enormous  compared to the amount that it would have taken to work with your young puppy. Your young pup is constantly learning about the world  and the rules regarding how to behave in it. Your pup does not mind  missing out on formal training- he will happily train himself! However, the  lessons he chooses to pick up are not usually the ones owners  would choose!

So don't wait and just have your fingers crossed that the problem will go away- take your puppy to training now.

The Puppy School Class is nationally recognised and  was started by Gwen Bailey, an internationally  acclaimed behaviourist. Gwen has written many books  on dog and cat behaviour and has developed the  successful set of classes known as Puppy School. All  tutors have been selected due to their experience and  background and are thoroughly  trained.

Puppy School is aimed at those of you with young pups- from  vaccination to 20 weeks of age. This class provides a training for life  regime that is aimed to teach your puppy obedience commands such as  sit, down, stand and come. Your pup will meet other pups and people and experience events that he/she may otherwise miss out on. You will also be taught how to teach your pup to walk nicely on his/her lead.

Who Can Come To Puppy School Class?

Pups should be fully vaccinated before their first class. Some vets may  allow a pup to come after its first vaccination depending on local risk.  This decision is dependent on your vet so seek advice before starting  class. This means that most pups will be about 12 weeks of age when  they start. The cut off point is for pups over 20 weeks when they start-  these are on the verge of adolescence and may learn to bully much  younger pups rather than learning to interact nicely.

If you would like to follow our class routine at home with your older puppy, please contact me to purchase the 'Training For Life' pack which includes:

  • Audio tape
  • Video tape
  • Explanation booklet
  • 6 lesson booklets
  • all only £19.99 (R.R.P. £34.99) (while stocks last)

The pack is intended for puppies between 3 - 5 months old, although the training principles are suitable for dogs of all ages. This pack is available to all clients booked into the Puppy School classes for £10*. (*subject to availability)

The Class.

Classes are currently held at:

St Swithun's Church Hall, Grovelands Road, Purley. 7.00pm and 8.15pm Tuesday evenings.

New classes start every 3 weeks so you will not have to wait long to start training your puppy.

There will be a MAXIMUM of 8 pups per class so that no pup should be left  out or feel overwhelmed. For this reason early booking is essential.

I will give you recommendations of work to do in-between classes. Remember the one hour session is there to direct you- the other 6 days and 23 hours a week are for you to do the work!

What Do You Need For Class?

1. Your puppy! Preferably hungry for his dinner.
2.VACCINATION Certificate- No pup will be allowed to join the first  class without this.
3. A soft, flat collar (with buckle or strong clip rather than one that tightens on tension) and soft nylon lead. No chains, harnesses  or flexi-leads in class please (harnesses on tiny, fragile dogs are acceptable). We will discuss your pup's requirements and training harnesses may be recommended in certain cases.
4.Some fabulous treats that make your pup want to work!
5.Your puppy's favourite toys- for rewarding great behaviour.
6.A piece of bedding for puppy to rest on.
7.A Water bowl for your pup. Training can be thirsty work. (There is a kitchen in the hall.)
8.Comfortable clothes- we are working with small pups and so we will  be working on the floor and moving about so you need to be comfy doing this. High heeled shoes are not suitable and can injure pups.
9.If your family will be working with your pup, bring them along too  when possible. Children over 5 years are welcome. If younger children  would like to come please arrange for another adult to come along to  help you. Young children are welcome to bring along books, colouring in, or toys to keep them occupied during explanations.
10.Toilet your pup before arriving at class. There is a grassy area outside both halls. Bins are provided so please pick up after your pup.

Cost.

We ask that you bring your pup for a course of 6 socialisation classes. The course costs £60 and includes weekly handouts and a free training gift (a Training For Life DVD ). We ask for the full payment to be made when you book in for the course as we will reserve your place and will turn down other potential clients once you have confirmed. Extra classes or individual sessions are often available at special rates.
